GROWMARK, FS Donate $60,000 to Support Ag Literacy

CHICAGO — GROWMARK and its FS member cooperatives recently renewed their commitment to Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom (IAITC) programs with $60,000 in support. During activities at the Illinois Farm Bureau Annual Meeting, Heather Thompson, GROWMARK manager of System Young Producer Programs, presented a symbolic check representing their contribution.

“GROWMARK is committed to the future of the agriculture industry,” Thompson said. “That commitment is demonstrated through our sustainability efforts, and our support for youth and young leader programs. We also believe it is critically important that tomorrow’s consumers grow up with ag education in their schools from a very young age. That’s why we proudly support the work of the IAA Foundation and its Ag in the Classroom program.”

GROWMARK’s contribution supports the grassroots efforts of the IAITC by helping fund county ag literacy coalition grants throughout Illinois. This year, more than $600,000 was distributed through this matching grant initiative, meaning more students and teachers have access to free resources and can engage in classroom experiences about agriculture.

“County AITC programs are the heart of our success,” said Kevin Daugherty, education director, IAITC.  “Partners like GROWMARK and the local FS cooperatives help us not only to continue our growth, but branch out to highlight new and important topics. In the last year we have highlighted nutrient management and pollinators to our audiences.”

IAITC has a rich history of being the agriculture education resource for teachers to utilize in classrooms. And this past year, new lessons, book grants and a poster series supported by GROWMARK grew awareness about the importance of pollinators in agriculture and food production.

“The more than 660,000 students and 40,000 teachers actively engaged in IAITC throughout Illinois will have access to these free educational resources,” said Susan Moore, director, IAA Foundation. “Thanks to donors like GROWMARK, we hope to continue growing that number.”
