Monday, December 9, proved to be a busy day at the Illinois Farm
Bureau Annual Meeting at the Palmer House in Chicago. It was cold
outside with snow-covered sidewalks, but it was warm inside with
the friendly folks and warm conversation of Farm Bureau members
from throughout the state. President Philip Nelson called the
business session of the meeting to order and delegates spent the
morning discussing, voting, and setting Farm Bureau
Attendees could also choose from several morning mini-seminars
where they could soak up new information on everything from
selecting cover crops and energy updates to carrying on a farming
legacy and creating new ideas for teaching, with some help from the
Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom staff.
Browsers in the Exhibit Hall enjoyed displays from county
winners of the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) County
Activities of Excellence (CAE) Awards. Cook County Farm Bureau
shared their "Passport to the Farm Camp." Marshall-Putnam Farm
Bureau displayed ImAGination Acres, and Randolph County Farm Bureau
was recognized for the "Agmazing 500."
FarmWeek staff were availalbe to chat and provided copies of
this week's FarmWeek, 'hot off the press.' RFD's Rita Frazer was on
hand to answer questions and do live interviews.
It was also the last day for bids at the IAA Foundation Silent
Auction. With so many beautiful and unique items on display, it was
hard to pick just one to bid on. Bidding closed about 4 pm, and
winning bidders went home with some extra baggage, but some great
IFB photographer Ken Kashian engaged with members and displayed
his 5th in a series limited print, "Resting Place." It was
available for purchase at the "Country Store," (along with a lot of
other great items, like gourmet popcorn and farming t-shirts) and
all proceeds go to the IAA Foundation.
After breaking for lunch, it was back to business for the
delegates, with consideration of resolutions, and showing what IFB
"grassroots" is all about.
The meeting resumes again this morning, as the 2013 IFB Annual
Meeting is about to come to a close. Safe travel to all
