MarketstudyinsThe 2014 Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) Study Tour will be held in the United States this year. The tour will focus on 'Port Infrastructure,' including ship, barge, rail, truck, and river delivery into and out of the port. The dates for the tour are Saturday, August 30 through Saturday, September 6.

This year’s tour will focus on providing participants with an opportunity to see major U.S. ports in the south-southeast and to learn more about expansions, upgrades, or challenges at those ports, as well as major ag-related products moving into and out of those ports. Ports will include:

  • Galveston/Port Arthur Texas
  • New Orleans, Louisiana,
  • Savannah, Georgia
  • Norfolk, Virginia

Participants will also meet with several stakeholders at each port, including:

  • Exporters
  • Importers
  • Port Authorities
  • Railroads
  • Unions
  • and more

Tamara Nelsen, Senior Director of Commodities for IFB, talked about what they hope to achieve through this tour. "Our ultimate goal is to develop a cadre of farmer leaders who can speak with authority on river, rail, highway, and other infrastructure issues and assist with future legislative priorities in these areas," she said. "Maintaining the competitiveness of American agriculture via investments in our infrastructure and cooperation with like-minded groups and coalitions will be a key outcome of the tour."
