Farmers Markets in Illinois

ILfarmmrkt _ins (1)Illinois is 3rd in the nation for the number of farmers markets, second only to California and New York. Illinois has gone from 96 farmers markets in 1996 to more than 375 today. Farmers markets across the country offer consumers farm-fresh, affordable, convenient, and healthy products such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, cheeses, meat, and much more.

Prairie Bounty of Illinois is an online directory of direct-from-the-farm sellers, farmers markets, and agritourism businesses. It contains contact information and locations for more than 900 individual growers of fruits, vegetables, and herbs throughout Illinois. The directory is constantly being updated as growers add their names and markets to the system. Here are a few tips to bring to the farmers market with you:

  • Shop early for better choices
  • Shop late for better deals
  • Know what's in season
  • Bring big bags and/or coolers
  • Bring small change
  • Buy in bulk and save
  • Ask the farmers questions

You will find many different specialty crops and products at farmers markets. Did you know Illinois is home to a large variety of specialty crops? More than $400 million was generated in 2013 from specialty crops. Here are a few:
