Cheese, ice cream, and butter...Oh my!
June is National Dairy Month, which began in 1937 as a way to promote drinking milk, and has now developed into an annual tradition that celebrates dairy farming.
Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) is celebrating dairy farmers' hard work each and every day. Dairy farming is a way of life for men and women all across the state. These dairy farmers are committed to keeping their cattle, families, and the planet safe and healthy. Illinois plays a vital role in the dairy community.
Illinois has more than 800 dairy herds. These dairy herds alone provided us with 218 million gallons of wholesome milk in 2013. Illinois farms help our economy, too. They generate more than $378 million in milk sales annually. The average Illinois dairy cow produce 6 gallons of milk a day. That's more than 2,252 gallons of millk over a typical year.
Be sure to thank a dairy farmer as we mooove through June!
