Annual Meeting 2013, which kicked off on Pearl Harbor Day,
Saturday December 7th, opened with an orchestral
fanfare of flags led by FFA and 4H
representatives, the Pledge of Allegiance and an opening prayer.
The evening held recognition of counties who received
awards for their merits and winners of the Liberty Bell Award
and the President's Award was announced.
As members lined up to enjoy delicious ice cream provided by Prairie Farms, the IAA
Foundation's live auction got underway. The auction was a big
success with bids being shouted across the cavernous ballroom for
each item that was called by the auctioneer. Thousands of
dollars were raised for Illinois Agriculture in the
Classroom. The Silent Auction, which runs through Monday
afternoon, was also seeing lots of visitors who were eagerly
recording their bids on the bid sheets.
Leaders demonstrated their mastery of public speaking in the
Discussion Meets held earlier in the day on Saturday also. Dale
Wachtel, a discussion meet judge from Effingham, and long-time Farm
Bureau member, shared his experiences with new judge, Sabrina
Burkiewicz, an Illinois Farm Bureau employee, while discussion meet
participants warmed up for the first round.
The evening concluded with Keynote Speaker,
Don Beebe, sharing his inspirational life story of faith,
fortitude and the importance of never giving up on life or your
