Donation from FS Seed help teach kids about farming

Tight budgets… skills testing… smart board lessons… teaching today's school children takes more innovation and resources than ever before. Luckily, the FS Seed Division of GROWMARK has generously donated $56,275 to Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom (IAITC). IAITC provides curricula for K-12 students and teacher training. The lessons teach about nutrition and farming and are linked to state learning standards.

GROWMARK's Jeff Solberg presented the check to Illinois Farm Bureau's Vice President Rich Guebert. IAITC also turned the presentation into learning lesson, by teaching everyone how to make "beanie babies." This lesson on germination is a popular activity in many classrooms. (Successful planters wore stickers saying,  I'm germinating….ask me how!")

The FS Seed Division has provided annual contributions to the Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom program since 2003. One-half of the donation is used for direct grants administered by FS member cooperatives at the local level. This year's contribution brings the eight-year total more than $460,000.

The donation will be managed by the IAA Foundation, which was established in 1987 to support educational, research and charitable activities, which benefit agriculture, Illinois farm families, and county Farm Bureaus. The IAA Foundation supports Illinois Ag in the Classroom programs through a variety of annual fundraising and donations such as the one from FS Seed.
