Annual Summer Horticultural Field Day to Spotlight Belleville Orchard

BELLEVILLE, Ill. — Guests are invited to tour an eight-generation orchard during the Illinois State Horticulture Society’s annual Summer Horticultural Field Day at Eckert’s Belleville Farm.

The Eckert family is proud to showcase their farm and agritainment operation on Thursday, June 9. The family has grown apples for more than 100 years and is proud of their farming heritage as diligent stewards of the land.

The orchard, 951 S Green Mt. Road, in Belleville, features a diverse selection of specialty crops, including apples, peaches, strawberries, black raspberries, blackberries, vegetables, pumpkins, Christmas trees, and flowers.

Guests can learn about the family’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and their best-in-class management techniques for improving crop health, protection and yield.

During the event, Chris Eckert will lead a field tour showcasing the orchard’s new growing practices in tree fruit, including applies in super high density, summer hedging, graft over apples utilizing new varieties from the Midwest Apple Improvement Association, sunburn control with drape nets, insect and disease management, and more.

Guests will hear from specialists in horticulture, plant pathology, entomology, and weed and pest management from the University of Illinois & Extension and Southern Illinois University will also be available during the field tour. Industry vendors, including seed and nursery representatives, will also be on hand to talk about new equipment, products and more.

For those not interested in the field tour, there will be a Farm Market session at the Country Store to discuss the retail market and bakery.
