Urge Congress to avert a rail strike; participate in action request

So far, 1,300 members have sent over 3,800 emails urging Congress to act swiftly to avert a threatened rail strike that could shut or slow down rail service all across the country.

On September 15th, President Biden and his administration successfully brokered an agreement between the National Railway Labor Conference and 12 unions. Since then, several unions have voted to not ratify the tentative agreement. This is setting up for a potential rail strike during harvest and right before the holiday season.

An immediate rail strike is not imminent, but it will likely lead to a nationwide rail shutdown on December 5th if they cannot come to terms on an agreement.

The shutdown would have drastic impacts on the US supply chain, which transports almost 40% of long-haul cargo by rail. A complete stoppage of the rail system would lead to shutdowns or slowdowns of rail-dependent facilities, resulting in devastating consequences to our national and global food security.

Under the Railway Labor Act, Congress can impose a resolution from Biden’s Presidential Emergency Board or direct the trains to operate as usual with an extension of negotiations.
