Looking Ahead

DeAnne Bloomberg, Director of Issue Management

As the fall harvest rolls on, our team will take a closer look at breaking down the messaging for external media regarding food inflation and the farmer's share of the food dollar. We have been very involved with the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) reports and helping news media understand the impacts of inflation on Illinois farmers.

For several months, we've been watching industry reports on the impact of avian flu on turkey production and what the media is reporting on regarding the Thanksgiving turkey dinner. The 4th of July cookout survey showed a 17% increase, but consumer demand did not decrease. Fuel prices have dropped, but we have several weeks of weather, global unrest, and elections to evolve before Thanksgiving.

We are already anticipating messaging needs for the 2023 landscape, such as 2023 Farm Bill, Illinois family farmers' role in the Illinois livestock industry, local and state government needs, and protecting the environment.
